The quelea bird is famous for its crop damage inflicted on small-grain crops. This bird leads to substantial economic losses in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and other African countries every year.
According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), one quelea bird can consume around 10 grams of grain each day. For example, farmers in western Kenya may lose nearly 60 tonnes of grain due to these birds. In 2021, the FAO estimated that the crop damage caused by the quelea birds results in annual losses of approximately $50 million.
In Africa, the preferred method of combating these pests has been to use fenthion (known as Queletox), a type of organophosphate pesticide. However, researchers have described this chemical as harmful to both humans and other non-target organisms. The widespread use of bird control product that do not specifically target quelea can lead to environmental contamination and mass mortality of other birds and animals. Actually, fenthion is toxic to non-target species including rodents, fish and other birds. The other challenge with using fenthion is the possibility that it is introduced into people as they consume the crops and animals.
Based on years of use, fenthion can therefore injure or kill indiscriminately. Fenthion residues are now known to have a half-life of 45 days and rainfall after sprays can cause fenthion to leach out of the soil and still be detectable five months later. Additionally, persistence of fenthion residues in the air for 64 hours and in soil for 46 days. This has caused concern among local African farmers and environmental groups.
According to reports, when fenthion was used in some areas, the spraying operators lacked standardized training, and irregular operations led to human poisoning and even death. Because of improper operation, it also caused water pollution and affected the water use of surrounding residents.
The Rotterdam Convention has, on multiple occasions, discussed listing the pesticide on the Annex III of the Convention – a list of pesticides and industrial chemicals that have been banned or severely restricted for health or environmental reasons. But each time consensus has not been reached due to lack of alternatives.
