Evaluation of 10% Hexaflumuron Bait for Controlling Formosan Subterranean Termites

This study, conducted by Pestman's technical staff, examines the effectiveness of a 10% hexaflumuron bait for eliminating colonies of Coptotermes formosanus (Formosan subterranean termites). Field trials were designed to determine the optimal dosage and treatment duration to eradicate termite colonies infesting trees. Results showed that the bait achieved complete colony elimination within 28–42 days with dosages ranging from 100 to 200 grams per colony. The findings highlight the potential of this bait to serve as an efficient method for termite control in shorter periods compared to traditional baits.

Coptotermes formosanus is widely distributed south of the 33.5° latitude in Aisa, causing severe damage to wooden structures, urban trees, and municipal infrastructure. Bait systems are considered an effective strategy for area-wide termite management. This study focuses on testing the efficacy of a 10% hexaflumuron bait, formulated with a higher concentration of active ingredients than conventional products, to evaluate its potential for faster colony elimination.

Materials and Methods

Field trials were conducted in Shnaghai, China. Termite monitoring and baiting devices were installed around trees heavily infested by termites. Mark-recapture methods were employed to estimate the termite population in each colony before treatment. Following this, the 10% hexaflumuron bait was applied to termite colonies in dosages of 100, 150, and 200 grams. Colony activity was monitored weekly for three months post-treatment. Colonies with no detectable activity over this period were considered eliminated.

Results

The study found that all treated colonies were successfully eliminated within 42 days, with an average eradication time of 33.7 days. Termites showed a high preference for the bait, consuming it within 9–14 days after application. The bait disrupted the termites’ digestive systems, preventing them from consuming alternative food sources and leading to colony collapse.

Discussion

Hexaflumuron, a benzoylurea insecticide, inhibits chitin synthesis in termites, preventing successful molting. Unlike traditional bait formulations with lower active ingredient concentrations, the 10% hexaflumuron bait demonstrated no repellency despite its higher potency. This makes it a promising candidate for rapid and effective termite control. Recommendations include further studies to improve the bait matrix and enhance termite palatability.

Conclusion

The study concludes that the 10% hexaflumuron bait effectively eradicates Coptotermes formosanus colonies in a shorter timeframe compared to conventional baits. Its potential for use in urban pest management warrants further exploration and commercial development.
